*Character Name(s): Shikaku Kawauso
*Race/Species: Wereotter
*Gender: Female
Actual Character Age: 32, looks to be about 23
Home Territory(Place of Origin): Wryn ("fantasy" world, alternate universe)
Height: Human form: 5'3"
Were form: 5'8"
Weight: 133 lbs in all forms
Physical Build: Slender, wiry
*Physical Description: Kawauso's features, in human form, are striking. She is short, but her body is slender, and she moves with an unconscious fluid grace as she walks. Kawauso prefers to wear her glossy black hair long, down to the small of her back when it hangs free. Her skin tone is fair, with a light dusting of freckles across her cheekbones and over the bridge of her nose, with full lips beneath, all in a beautiful oval face.
The only thing really marring this feminine beauty are her eyes. They aren't there. A long scar tracks over the ruins where her eyes used to be and across the bridge of her nose, from temple to temple. To hide this she wears a strip of bandaging or white cloth around her head like a bandanna, hiding the scarring and the empty sockets of her eyes. For her other clothes, she wears traditional Japanese clothing, a hakama, gi, haori, and so forth. If she needs to dress up, she'll wear a formal kimono.
When she shifts into her otter form, she doesn't really grow, as most weres do. She bulks up slightly, but remains slender and lithe. Her face presses out into a lutrine muzzle, ears sliding up the sides of her head, thick, luxurious brown fur sprouting over her entire body. She also gains a thick, rudderlike tail, which pokes through a cunningly hidden hole in the pleats in the back of her hakama.
In any of her forms, she is soft-spoken. She doesn't like to make a scene...unless it is either unavoidable, or it is of more benefit than remaining unobtrusive. Kawauso is calculating, choosing her words carefully, though she is careful not to let this show in conversation.
Personal Information/History/Background: Kawauso was born on the world known as Wryn, what people in this universe would call a fantasy world. Both humans and anthropomorphic animals were common enough, with human-grade intelligence animals also around. More rare were shifters, between human and anthro or otherwise. As such, with astronomical and earthly signs prevalent (stars in alignment, patterns of flying birds and marching ants) that the child of a noble house was born as one who could shift between a human and anthropomorphic otter, there was much rejoicing in the household. When further such signs pointed to her latent ability for the Sight, the rejoicing was multiplied.
However, as in any society, when some people see a cause for rejoicing, others see a source of profit. When Kawauso was sixteen years old, she was kidnapped and held for ransom by a group of thieves. Her House's retainers, led by her father, rescued her, but in the struggle with the thieves, she was wounded, and both her eyes ruined. Thus blinded, her potential station as a pillar of Shikaku House was snatched away, relegating her to a position in the background.
As she grew older, her fate as a wereotter and ability with the Sight manifested, though nothing short of divine intervention could restore her sight. So, she became accustomed to a background role, and found pleasure in being the one pulling the strings from the shadows. Even with her disability, she was able to weild her beauty and station as a weapon, increasing her own and her House's influence among the noble houses.
Perhaps it could be said that she was a little too good at advancing her House. Several lesser Houses, jealous of Shikaku's rapid rise, banded together to wipe out the powerful noble house. Bands of assassins infiltrated the central home of the Shikaku family, tearing their way through the House's defenses in a rain of blood. When the alarm was raised, the defenders of the House took up arms to defend, but they were hoplessly outnumbered.
As the last defenders were overwhelmed, Kawauso herself concentrated, trying to pull together a spell that would at least let herself, the other women, and the children of the house escape. Her knowledge of magic rudimentary at best, and guided only by her Sight, perhaps it was luck that the portal that she prayed for opened, pulling her through...and into Shifters.
*Number and Description of Weaponry and Training: As a child, she was trained in kenjutsu and aikido, and so she knows how to use either a sword or her own body as a weapon...though the practicality of these lessons are lessened by her inability to see. She carries with her a katana, simply because even though her second sight is imperfect, it's better than going unarmed.
* Useful Trinkets or Items: She has the clothes on her back, and also a walking staff, that provides her with a prop as well as a way of keeping from walking into things.
Vehicle: None
*Special Skills:
Second sight skill level 7 (innate) - though Kawauso is fully blind, she has gained a kind of magical "second sight." It allows her to see the "auras" around living creatures, but not really a whole lot else. When she looks at a living creature, she sees the creature itself, though it glows with an aura surrounding it. This aura can tell multiple things about the creature, such as general health level, whether or not the creature is telling the truth (though it can't determine what the truth is), or true form behind any illusion or shapeshifted form. It is not perfect, and especially away from her homeland it is blurred and indistinct. At worst, though, it still shows her the location of living creatures around her, and with considerable concentration she can force it into focus...though if the will of the target is strong enough, there isn't a whole lot she can do.
However, the biggest downside to the second sight is that it only shows up nonliving objects as how they have been in contact with living organisms. For example, it will show a sword in a person's hand, ready to be swung, but it will not show the same sword sitting on a table, a wall two inches in front of her face, or a car barrelling down the road towards her (save for the steering wheel, door handles, pedals, and other parts that have had significant contact with living organisms). Locations or objects with significant human contact (murder weapons, holy ground, etc.) will have an aura of their own, corresponding with the natire of the contact.
Martial Arts: Kenjutsu skill level 3 - Kawauso is knowledgeable of kenjutsu, though how useful it is to her is moderated by her inability to see.
Martial Arts: Aikido skill level 3 - Kawauso is knowledgeable of aikido, though how useful it is to her is moderated by her inability to see.
Enhanced senses skill level 1 (innate) - in otter form, she has enhanced senses of hearing and smell.
Natural weapons skill level 1 (innate) - she's got claws and teeth, and can use them!
Regeneration skill level 1 (innate) - heals quickly from damage
Diplomacy skill level 5 - knows how to handle and read people, what buttons to push, when to go all in and when to fold. She's got a killer poker game.
Shifter (innate) - Kawauso can shift into an anthropomorphic otter and back. Her shift trigger is the new moon.
Shift Control skill level 3 - If necessary, Kawauso has the mental discipline to hold off her shifting, though on the new moon that all evaporates.
Shifting speed skill level 3 - Kawauso shifts at a normal, average speed.
Shifting Repercussions Shifting too quickly, or trying too hard not to shift, leaves her tired, aching, and naseous, and blurs her Sight even further.
*SKILLS TOTAL: 27
Character's Career: Occultist, diplomat, beaurocrat
Fav. Saying/Quote: "Let me take a look..."
Preferred Food: Smoked eel sushi
Stats:
Intelligence – 6.5 / 6.5
Kawauso is intelligent, incredibly so. With considerable book learning before she was blinded, and even afterwards from careful tutors, she knows an awful lot, and is quite bright.
Intuition – 7.0 / 7.0
Perhaps Kawauso's greatest strength lies in her intuition. Helped by her Sight, she can read people, and is generally amazingly aware of what is going on around her...as long as it doesn't involve an inanimate object being accellerated toward her face.
Willpower – 6.6 / 6.6
She has learned to be stubborn, and to never give up. Whether it comes from her naturally, or is learned from her disability, it is there.
Agility – 5.0 / 6.0
Kawauso is agile naturally, with her lithe build, and increasingly agile when she shifts into an otter.
Strength – 4.0 / 5.0
A mostly indoor life has its downsides. Though she is physically fit, Kawauso is small and unmuscular.
Endurance – 4.0 / 5.2
Her endurance is more a product of Kawauso's will to go on more than anything else, but she has some in her to back it up.
Speed – 5.0 / 6.0
As most of her exercise consisted of runs when she was younger, Kawauso can run reltively fast, especially when shifted. However, this doesn't help her out a whole lot if she runs into a wall...
