Physical Description
Miri stands only 5' 1" tall, with a cute, almost childish face made more so by her large expressive green eyes. A small, slightly upturned nose and pleasant lips sit in the almost oval face framed by her straight red hair. Lower, she has toned arms and small, slender hands. Her somewhat obvious "feminine assets" has garnered her no small amount of rude comments throughout High School and College and has led to many folk thinking she should have been an exotic dancer. Lower, her tummy is flat and toned, with a thin, tight line down it and when tight a solid and visible six-pack emerges, testament to a continuing exercise regimen. Wide hips and an ample rear lead down into heavy thighs and large calves, the legacy of her long flirt with gymnastics, a hobby during Elementary school which went semi-pro in her High School years, but abated in College. Small, dainty feet end the package.
Clothing-wise, Miri usually wears comfortable clothing, in warmer weather jean shorts or a short skirt and a T-shirt, in cooler weather replacing this with blue jeans and a button-down shirt, switching to an almost tomboyish look using a loose, comfortable flannel shirt in winter under her jacket.
Personal Information / History
Miri is an only child born to middle-class parents in Syracuse, New York. Through her formative years, Miri grew up in a loving, caring family, albiet one tinged with a bit of strangeness. Both her mother and father are fans of science fiction literature (and indeed met, as they will willingly say, at a convention). Thus, Miri was exposed to a wide variety of strange and unusual concept as she grew up, and well before her teenage years she grew convinced that if there is this much fiction out there than there must be some truth to it. When she reached the age of 12, though, strangeness came to her and sought her out. While practicing gymnastics, the rope she was scaling as an exercise came loose of its' fittings, dropping her to the mat and almost breaking her neck. The resulting concussion left her in a three-week coma. When she woke, though, she recovered swiftly and decided that despite the pain and fear she would remain undaunted. Her parents encouraged her, and she returned to school and her beloved hobby of gymnastics. It was two months after that she began having "flashes", moments where she was sure she knew what someone was thinking, how they were feeling, and both dreams and nightmares of things past or possibly to come. Rather than take her to a child psychologist, after hearing her description, Miri's parents began questioning her in detail as to what was happening. As the picture formed, Miri's father, Mark, was the one who formulated simple, basic tests, and drew the conclusion that somehow, through some quirk of fate, his daughter had developed psi powers. Miri's mother, Josephine, agreed as well, and they all agreed that she would need to keep it a secret, use it as little as possible, and that she would HAVE to practice and train to control them. The oft-quoted line was "an untrained telepath is a danger both to themselves and to others."
Through the rest of her Junior High and High School years, Miri practiced in private, sharing the knowledge of her talents only with her best friend, Tara Anderson. Her worst moment was during her last month of High School, when John Barker, a fellow senior, decided that Miri would be his, and attempted to rape her in a teacher's bathroom. She narrowly escaped the rape, and the resulting struggle left both she and Anderson hurt enough that school officials handled the rest. Nonetheless, this incident prompted Miri to learn self-defence and how to shoot a pistol, and left her with a policy of always passively "listening" with her empathy. While her listening has lessened in the last four years, she keeps her pistol license up to date and still takes the occasional refresher course in basic self-defence twice a year.
As time has progressed, Miri hasgained more skill and talent in the use of her abilities, but kept her Talents a secret. During her time at Syracuse, she suffered through a series of (to her) truly bizarre dreams, ones which involved New York City, and a few rapid images she still has yet to make sense of. Realizing she would get no peace without seeking out what she saw in her visions of New York.
((Op/GM Only data - her vision was of the back secret area of the Shifters bar, and of individuals changing. No-one specific, just in general. At Op request, feel free to insert faces or names here for this or change it entirely, as it's meant to be a "hook" to get her involved.))
Number and Description of Weaponry and Training:
After a brush with a nearly-successful rape at the end of her High School years, Miri sought training in the basics of self defense and at the urging of her father learned how to use a handgun with passable confidence on the range. She is highly likely however to panic and not fire in a combat situation unless something is TRULY dire. Her ability to fight in hand to hand is about that of a second-year /basic/ student in Tae Kwon Do.
Despite knowing how to fire a handgun, Miri doesn't own a handgun, even though she has a license (though not a carry or concealed carry permit).
Useful Trinkets or Items: A duffel bag full of personal effects and clothing.
Vehicle: None. When not in the city confines, Miri is prone to use buses and trains (AMTRAK and the various commuter rail systems) or hitchhike, using her talents to ensure a safe trip. As long as she has cash, she will ALWAYS pay for transportation, even if she hitchhikes.
Special Skills:
Miri is a self-trained natural psychic. All of her training and knowledge comes either from the internet's vast resources (often contradictory), books on the matter (also equally contradictory), or the many and varied science fiction and fantasy literature available on the subject (markedly LESS contradictory, in a strange twist). Her powers, though, are sharply limited, both in range and in scope, and unless someone were to assist her in learning or mastering new abilities, she will forever remain at this power level.
Empathy - the ability to sense and project emotions. Miri instinctively scans the emotions of people around her within a 50m range. This will ONLY pick up on the moment-to-moment surfacemost emotions, and even then only weakly, enough to get a general impression. Actively attempting to scan can either push the range to 75m, OR increase the sensitivity to get something more specific, though at the cost of range (in this "active scan" mode her range drops to 25m). Miri can project an emotion to someone within 25m of her, and can make it something more complex upon skin-to-skin (or fur) contact. If she brushes against someone in the throes of deep emotion, she will likely inadvertantly scan their surface emotional state, but not more than that.
Telepathy - Miri is a short-range (25m) telepath, both projective and receptive, though either version requires the expenditure of effort and energy. It does NOT trigger accidentally, and for anything more than basic communication requires some concentration.
Suggestion - Miri's most practiced and skilled ability. In a simple nutshell, it is the use of close-range (3m or so) empathy and telepathy to implant a simple suggestion. Also nicknamed "The Jedi Mind Trick", or by her one friend who knows of her Talents "the invidious mind woogy".
Postcognition - Almost entirely uncontrolled, this is the tendency to see the past of an object or place. It will sometimes, in rare (read GM-controlled) circumstances trigger in a location or when handling an object. With great effort, several hours' time, and constant, continuous handling or presence within an area, she can sometimes (about 50%) see the past of an object or place.
Precognition - Absolutely, utterly uncontrolled, and usually showing up in the form of recurring dreams or nightmares. This ability is purposely left vague as it is intended not for voluntary use under any circumstance but as a "hook" for the GM's of the campaign to drop a plot down on her and any companions. [Note that as a player, I hereby swear to NEVER write anything involving this ability unless contacted SPECIFICALLY by a GM requesting it of me.]
Psi-block - Miri has a barely-trained ability to shield herself against outside psi. Much of this is merely instinct and the most basic of self-training based around numerous sources. It has never, ever been tested, and she relies upon only her own confidence that it works.
Biofeedback - Miri was always "in touch" with her body, and one of the things that likely came of that is her own ability to boost her performance up to nearly-superhuman levels for short bursts. This is used to enhance running speed and/or reaction time, jump tremendously (up to the true physical limits of her body), and allow for short bursts of strength. It does NOT make her truly superhuman, but it DOES ignore the inbuilt restriction deeply wired into the human psyche to use only 20% of our strength and endurance. However, the price must be paid in the end: sore, bruised muscles, pain, and rapid exhaustion, and if prolonged over-much, rapid fluctuations in blood sugar and eventual unconsciousness. Maximum jump using this is about 12m (40 feet) straight up/down or 23m (74 feet) on a standing long jump, maximum run is 37kph (23mph), and for a few moments (not more than 20 - 30 seconds) she can lift up to 1,000 pounds. Basically, all the things you hear of humans doing in the deepest adrenaline surges, but not more, and with prices in pain, notable injury (yes, she can sprain or rip muscles like this if she is not careful) and exhaustion.
Empathy and telepathy in "projection" mode require concentration, meaning she is distracted from other tasks, just like someone trying to walk and read a book. These are not physically tiring unles used extensively over an extended period (such things as maintaining ONLY telepathic communication over several hours would leave her with a headache and tired)
Suggestion is a momentary-use thing, and of course required her to act appropriately. Usually, this isn't hard. Of course, there is the moral baggage of having willingly altered someone's mind against their will. This is NOT usually a nice thing to do, and Miri thus uses it only for minor, relatively harmless things and even then only when there is no other easily-found way. It is also, as can be guessed, meant for use primarily against NPC's and such. Obviously, using it on a PC will be handled with consent in the OOC room.
Precognition and postcognition: Energy-wise, these are also usually not taxing, but they DO have consequences. Both tend to show up as dreams or visions, and if something truly disturbing ocurred this can end up leaving her with bad nightmares. The effects of precog I'm leaving completely up to the ops/GM's, as it is supposed to be a plot device for the GM to drop things on us players. It could be anything from a momentary vision in the middle of a street up to involved dreams at night showing her a future that could likely occur unless something is done (or, something unchangeable in the near-future, if the GM's want to take a Babylon 5-style stance on precog, where what is seen is predestined, period.)
With her postcognition, Miri's depth of sight will be left up to the GM's. If she consciously is trying to read an object or a place, no more than a month, unless the GM directly states that Miri will be seeing deeper. As with any such abilities, it is safest to allow the GM to moderate its' use and thus it is left open as a plot hook. Thus, it can cause a momentary dramatic scene leading into maybe a whole adventure, or uncovering something vital to the plot.
Character's Career: An English major in college, Miri has yet to permanently settle on a career. Thus, she odd-jobs. Her parents aid her as they always have, and for this she's grateful. She worries deeply about coping with the less-controlled aspects of her powers and these visions. Currently, she is seeking a places in New York City that were in her visions in order to see about getting her life back on track and her mind in its' place.
