So you want to be a werehyena?
Werehyenas are quite rare in the United States, with the highest population in the state of Louisiana. In the Western Hemisphere, the highest populations currently reside in Jamaica, the island of Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic) and several smaller Caribbean island nations. They arrived in the Americas via the Slave Trade.
Werehyenas have a fairly large (for a were race) presence in Africa, and have long had their paws in the politics of quite a few African countries. The original werehyenas descended from the Nubians in what is now Sudan, but soon spread throughout much of Sub-Saharan Africa. Though their presence has become part of African Folklore, the humans rarely if ever were able to do much about it.
Collectively, werehyenas are traditionally considered to be a single people, despite the wide array of ethnicities that their human forms take. They are properly called the Ena Nation, or the People of Mungu. The title of the Ena Nation in modern times also refers to the network of influential and powerful werehyenas, the large portion of which live in Africa. The total number in this network is said to number at least in the hundreds, though few are actually in places of considerable power. In most African countries, there are at least 2 werehyenas that are fairly high up in the national governments, and in a few, namely Nigeria, South Africa and Ethiopia, there are werehyenas in the executive Cabinet.
The Ena Nation is mostly used as a network of communication between the werehyenas to promote their agenda. The agenda is considerably benign, considering that one of their biggest concerns is preventing war, which would disrupt their network and force members of the Nation to fight against each other. The country of Sudan is of considerable concern, considering its destabilizing affect on the region, and the lack of highly placed werehyenas in the national government.
Typically, the biggest concern of the Ena Nation is helping their own people, especially those that are trying to escape poverty.
The religion of the werehyenas often takes center-stage to those living in Africa. The Religion of the Ena nation is simply called Ena. They worship a single God, called Mungu, who is known for his many many forms and masks. His most glorious and sacred mask is the Night Sky. In Ena, the Night is the time of renewal, when the world sleeps, without which the world would whither and die under the harshness of the Day. The night of the New Moon is considered to be a holy night, and that is when most of the rituals of the religion take place, including the Dance of the NightBringer, an extremely complicated, intricate ritual would involves two people, one representing Day, the other representing Night, and an extreme amount of physical exercise. The religious leaders are typically priestesses, though there are priests, and the highest religious official, who is considered the leader of the Ena nation (and whose identity has been hidden for the most part in the past 200 years.) is a male.
